Hugo Create

Evaluation
OUGD203 Product, range and distribution

The original brief I chose was for Hugo to create a stencil using ‘The spirit of Berlin’. The brief was so open I decided to define it myself. The brief I re wrote was to design packaging for a new set of seasonal fragrance for Hugo Boss and to also promote it. I stuck with the theme of stencils and wall art by creating stencils for each season. I laser cut the stencils so that they were perfect and then spray-painted onto the simple packaging I designed and printed. I did a few test pieces first as I purchased some of my own silver stock, which I wasn’t sure the spray paint, would take. As it worked fine I went ahead with the packaging.  I also created larger stencils to use for some posters I had designed using some photographs I had taken. After a crit and after speaking to Lorenzo I realized that the packaging was based around stencils and therefore the laser cut stencils should be included in or as part of the packaging itself rather than spray-painted onto the packaging. This was because the effect of the spray paint could have been done using Photoshop and therefore the stencils would go to waste. By this time I didn’t have enough time to re print my packaging and laser cut therefore I I hand cut one to show this is how I wanted it to look and proposed the other seasons would be done the same.  For part of the promotion I designed a 2D barcode, which would be, spray-painted on walls around the city centre with the designs and Hugo Boss logo. This barcode could be scanned into an iPhone or other smart phone and a list of places would appear for where the perfume could be purchased along with a link to the Hugo Boss website.  I also created pages that link to the website for each season.
From this brief I realized that I probably wasted a lot of time creating stencils and actually laser cutting them and spray painting them where I could have just photoshopped them or proposed them.
In this brief I have learnt about laser cutting and realized its something I enjoy a lot.  I have also enjoyed creating packaging again and also feel this is something I would like to explore further in the third year. I feel I have managed my time efficiently in this module, more so in the Hugo brief rather than the YCN, which I felt  a lot of time was wasted on changing ideas rather than creating good work. If I were to do re-do the YCN brief I would make sure the original idea was stronger and more focused and make sure that me and my partner Nat knew exactly who needed to do what therefore the work wouldn’t be repeated. I wasn’t too pleased with the outcome in the YCN brief and much preferred working on my own.
